Service Quality: Measure What "Exceptional Service" Actually Costs

Everyone promises "exceptional service"

Every cruise line says it. The brochure says it. The website says it. Your client has heard it from all of them.

The Service Quality Index measures what that promise actually costs a line to keep — starting with the crew-to-guest ratio, the single most predictive metric for onboard service quality.

The ratio that matters

Ultra-luxury lines average one crew member for every 1.3 guests. Contemporary lines run closer to 1:2.6.

That gap shows up in everything — dining room attentiveness, cabin turnaround speed, poolside drink delivery. The ratio isn't the whole story, but it's the foundation.

Six dimensions, one scorecard

On top of ratios, the index blends composite service ratings from expert assessments and verified guest reviews across six dimensions:

Crew-to-guest — the raw ratio per line, with tier averages for comparison.

Overall service — composite of expert ratings and verified guest feedback.

Dining service — speed, attentiveness, and consistency across main dining and specialty venues.

Cabin service — steward attentiveness, turndown quality, and issue-resolution speed.

Spa & wellness — therapist quality, facility condition, and booking availability.

Excursions — coordination quality, guide knowledge, and port-side logistics.

How to use it

Each line gets a scorecard you can share with clients who want to see the data. When a client asks "is it really worth paying more for the luxury line?", you don't answer with an opinion. You answer with the ratio and the six-dimension breakdown.

Objective data for subjective conversations. That's the whole point.
